Over the last twenty years there has been a surge of films and streaming series overseen by Indigenous directors and script writers, with Native actors cast in starring roles. Known as the “New Native Cinematic Renaissance,” this surge has allowed creatives to center themes of importance to Native American and First Nations communities—some of the most crucial of which relate to core spiritual elements of kinship, healing, and balance. In this lecture DeSanti (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) will explore spiritual representations in the First Nations film Don’t Say Its Name as well as in scenes from streaming series Echo and Reservation Dogs. Through them he will address issues of historic and ongoing importance in 21st Century Indian Country.

PRE-TALK FILM SCREENING: The film Don’t Say Its Name will be screened on campus before the talk, March 12 at 6:30pm in Stein 133.
